Rediscovering Poetry - Edgar Allan Poe

Alone

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

Edmund Dulac (1882 - 1953)

This poem is sad though full of life and I found this illustration of Edmund Dulac which is so magnetic and matches so well, rather than the vast majority of Poe's illustrations, often too much darkeness - Note this grey blue sky. What makes you feel? Fear? Sadness? Anguish? Solitude? Why do the cloud took the form of a demon in Poe's view?

My day

Gosh! I feel between Bukowski (Post Office)  and kafka (The trial) preparing postcards the old fashion way.
I'm just looking forward to social media evening classes.

Slobbery today, happy tomorrow

That is it. I am so slobbery today. Tomorrow I will be flying to Lisbon for one week holiday and Oh my days! I need it badly. Sun shining, hot weather, beach, the good feeling of climbing Lisbon’s hill, smell of fresh fish, especially sardines, roasted meat, a good laugh outside, where everyone is, in the terrace because the warm at home becomes unbearable. The Portuguese style is humble, genuine and proud (of its discovery roots). It is summertime, make the most of it! By the way, what do you think about a gin tonic for late night, while the soccer match is on? After all is Euro semi-final Portugal- Spain, we have to see it. Bring it on!

(One of thousands beautiful Lisbon's views)

My namby-pamby dues to the memories I have about the country I was born. Its 1000 wonders are a part of my life. Since childhood to date, say, mature ages then you have to move on somehow and start a new life. It is life. Paolo Sorrentino, the Italian director, said wisely “there is a time where you stop thinking about why this or that is happening in your life to deduce that’s life”. Nevertheless, the hometown, the first city and country always will be first loves and give butterflies in the stomach every time you see them. Right buddies?

Don’t do that at home

Someone once said, I don’t remember the author, “smoke has its sensuality”, and it has indeed. You may disagree with me, judge me or crucify me but looking at this picture I can understand the statement. I was I smoker until I came to London, thus I realize cigarettes are too expensive and even if you don’t feel physically ill yet you will when your youth days over. That is consciousnesses. I feel fresh without them; however there are some days I’d really fancy smoking. My prior addition it was not about the flavor but the whole concept of inhale and exhale the smoke, that movement always made my self-esteem grow. I remember happily my first university season, where it all started. Now I feel a lot better without the bad habit, but whilst I am enjoying a mojito I often remember my cigarette, I do!

Wednesday nights at The Frontline Club

First Belarus, now Ukraine. What comes next I don’t know…Increasingly I see myself into Europe’s matters and issues. It is Europe in my “inner-self”? Is this some kind of sign? After I found that journalistic independent club, in Paddington, I go there once per month to see some documentaries that are hard to find in the shops. Perhaps Belarus documentary had focused my attention: “The last dictator in Europe”, which for those who don’t know him is called Alexander Lukashenko (I googled it as the name is so hard to write without errors). How come I knew nothing about that country and its oppressive rules? Right, now “Ukraine, from democracy to caos” seems to have something in common: repression, lack of freedom, severe political leaders that are not elected by people’s power but by fraudulent elections. We have to do something about it; this land can’t be no longer the Europe from 20th century. As if economical and financial crisis wasn’t enough. Stop… Instead of bringing bad things from the past let’s become inspired by the greatness of this leader: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”. M. Luther King.

Hello everybody, from now on I will start to write more in  English than Portuguese. The thing is a need to start doing my own portfolio of articles to achieve an international career.
Hope my Portuguese fellows understand.
Cheers!
